The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke when grouped together are often referred to as the Synoptic Gospels, or simply the Synoptics, within Biblical studies circles. This is a result of the close relationship they share in terms of the common stories they narrate about Jesus; so much so that scholars argue that there could be a common document upon which they drew upon: Q (from the German word Quelle) or that they are dependent upon each other for their information.
The purpose of this LibGuide is to provide researchers with important resources on better understanding the Synoptic Gospels and also the Synoptic Problem. If students would like to find commentaries on the individual Gospels they should go the New Testament Commentaries LibGuide.
This First Column will provide resources about the Synoptic Gospels in general; scroll down to see more specific books on the individual books.
